Clonmel Bowl 2010

The Mullingar Soldiers travelled to Clonmel to play in a four team Flag Football Tournament last Saturday. The weather was warmer than expected and some players were nursing the flu.

We lost our 1st game against the Roscrea Falcons despite leading by two scores going into the closing minutes of the game.A freak touchdown and then a great catch by Ed Rowe of the Falcons in the dying seconds sent the Soldiers crashing to defeat. In the 2nd game , with the Soldiers still down after the manner of their defeat in the 1st game and the fact that we had to play a second 48 minute game on the back of this against the rested Clonmel Warriors , meant the Soldiers got off to a slow start in what was a poor first half . However the second half exploded into life when the Clonmel running back didnt take kindly to the physical nature of Soldiers WR/CB Beglan. This event seemed to wake the rest of the team from their slumber and they produced a storming finish to rally back and take the lead . A great INT by QB/CB Brennan in the endzone to keep the Warriors from making it a two score game late in the 4th led to a long TD on a pass from Brennan to Beglan on the very next offensive play. With a one point lead the Soldiers seemed destined to win . However , controversial time-keeping by the Clonmel players/referrees led to Clonmel scoring a winning TD in the dying seconds to break Soldiers hearts.

In spite of the manner of the defeats Mullingar fought hard and never gave up all day. A special word of mention should be given to Dean Boyce , Alan Beglan , Eoin Coates , Conor Brennan ,and Sean Allen for the way they battled on and came from behind twice late only to suffer cruel defeats.

Highlights include:

                                   * Dean's amazing TD catch in the corner of the endzone , keeping two feet in bounds on a laser from Brennan.

                                   * Brennan throwing 6 TD's and rallying the Soldiers on two go-ahead TD drives in the 4th Q.

*Sean Allen's magical 50 yard TD run .

                                   * Alan Beglans 55 yard TD catch in the 4th Q against Clonmel.

So its back to the training ground for the Soldiers as they look to build on this valuable experience that we will all benefit from in the months ahead.

Go Soldiers!

Things are progressing nicely for the Soldiers . Training has been held every week this year and we are starting to see real development from a playing stand-point . Here are some of the main updates regarding the team :

* The Soldiers will be participating in a Flag Football Tournament in Clonmel on the 27th of Feb . We will be playing the Roscrea Falcons and Clonmel Warriors , with the GMIT Giants also expected to play . This will be a great opportunity to build team chemistry under a competitive circumstance. Players are welcome to invite friends and family to come and watch .

*The past few weeks have seen a steady rise in the number of new players coming down to training and seeing what we have to offer. We hope that those players will decide to keep going and become part of our team . As always feel free to come down to the Harbour Field ( Opposite Loreto College ) at 2pm every Saturday if you are interested . No experience required!

*One of our members David Healion recently had his long-awaited surgery on his ankle injury . Best wishes from all of the Soldiers family on his recovery , and hopefully he'll be back at training in just a few weeks.
